Attend class without leaving your desk! Instructor Les Besser will be presenting a live real-time webinar June 25-29 on RF Fundamentals. This course is basically the equivalent of one full day's worth of material spread out over five 90-minute sessions (Monday through Friday). Instead of traveling to the course location, you just log in from any computer with a high-speed internet connection at the time that the course starts (9AM Pacific Time). Now you can learn about RF, ask questions, view CAE examples on the instructor's computer, all with a minimal interruption in your daily schedule. You can also schedule a corporate exclusive webinar series for as few as ten people - it's a convenient way to train employees whether they are all in one location or spread out at different design centers.
Based on feedback from our students, we have added a new site to this year's public course schedule. The Greenbelt, Maryland location is on the north side of the beltway, with convenient access to BWI airport. The site offers nearby hotels within walking distance, as well as a Metro station within a couple of miles for "car-free" access to Washington D.C. sights.

After many years of discussion, the IMS 2007 show in Honolulu has finally come and gone. Downtown Honolulu, while offering many of the same sights and sounds as any other venue, also offered the unique sight of people walking to and from the beach, surfboards in hand. Waikiki also offered some of the nicest backdrops you could ever want for the various receptions at the show. Most exhibitors expressed that although traffic was down from other years, the quality of the leads was very high.
Congratulations to Les Besser for earning the MTT-S2007 Distinguished Educator Award of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). This award is given to a distinguished educator in the field of microwave engineering and science who exemplifies the special human qualities of the late Fred J. Rosenbaum who considered teaching a high calling and demonstrated his dedication to the MTT-S through tireless service.
Signal integrity and the problems associated with managing unwanted radiation have gained increasing prominence as issues that engineers need to understand fully in order to work with today's projects. In response, we have added three courses in this subject area to our public course schedule in the coming months. With the addition of these courses, Besser Associates now offers a thorough program covering issues related to EMC/EMI, shielding, and signal integrity.
EMC and Signal Integrity Design Strategies (Course 193)
This three-day course provides participants with the theory and practical know-how required to design and test well behaved and EMC compliant circuits and systems. The selection and application of magnetic and capacitive control components will be explained. Classic grounding, shielding, connectorization, and transmission line approaches for high speed and wide bandwidth signals will be covered in depth. Time domain and frequency domain characterization of wiring and cabling will be taught with live demonstrations. Analog, RF, digital, and mixed signal applications will be explored from a unified viewpoint to enable analog and digital engineers to work in new territory. Course 193-3781:Aug 13-Aug 15, 2007: San Jose, CA Presented by Orin E. Laney Register by 7/9/2007 and pay $1295, otherwise pay $1395
EMI/EMC Fundamentals with Emphasis on Successful Shielding Strategies (Course 182)
EMC is straightforward although it can be non-intuitive. This two-day seminar eliminates the bewilderment by explaining and quantifying EMC coupling mechanisms so that designers can understand, anticipate and resolve EMC problems prior to product design. Proper design techniques are discussed for minimizing unwanted coupling and crosstalk at the PCB level. With the proper design techniques, it is possible to achieve RF isolation levels in excess of 150 dB. Course 182-3802:Dec 03-Dec 04, 2007: San Jose, CA Presented by Orin E. Laney Register by 10/29/2007 and pay $795, otherwise pay $895
EMC Design, Bench Top Measurements and Troubleshooting Techniques - A Practical Approach (Course 196)
Because time-to-market and budget factors often drive many of today’s high-tech designs, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues often surface at the last moment in the design cycle, potentially delaying product introductions. Very often, simple pre-compliance measurements and techniques can identify issues early when the cost of implementation is substantially lower and design improvements may be made with less impact on schedules. This seminar series covers a number of simple techniques and tools useful in characterizing designs at various stages of development and will better prepare products for EMC qualification. Course 196-3900:May 14-May 16, 2008: Burlington, MA Presented by Kenneth Wyatt Register by 4/7/2008 and pay $1295, otherwise pay $1395
Make plans to join us for our summer schedule of courses in the Silicon Valley. Summer is also a great time to visit nearby sights, such as wine country, Monterey, or even Yosemite. Just make sure to bring a jacket, because the famous San Francisco fog can be quite chilly!
