How Many Watts, Milliwatts, Microwatts, etc.?

The next step is to check if the remaining value is in the 20’s or 10’s range.

If you can subtract 20 from the remaning number without going negative, you are talking about a final value that is some multiple of hundreds, since we memorized that 20dB is a factor of 100x. If you can subtract 10 from the remaining number without going negative, the final value is a multiple of 10's, 10dB is a factor of 10x. If the remaining number is less than 10, the converted value will be between 1 and 10.

For our example the remaining value was 17, so we can subtract 10 without going negative and our result will be 7 dB worth of 10's of kilowatts. We convert the remaining value in the next step.
